Passion Never Retires for Maria Strova

What is the best thing that I love about my work? Seeing women open up to dance and life through the expression of their bodies. Saying yes to what life has to offer, good and bad. Becoming an “Anti-odalisque” which is the name of the dance program and is about following your heart and muse, expressing yourself and you’d like to, not as people want you to express yourself.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? Breathing, feeling quiet inside and happy to be with others.

What is my greatest fear? That ignorance and hate will prevail in the world.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? That when something hurts me, I have to work it out to the end and cannot wait, have to do right away, even if is at 3 in the morning.

What is my greatest extravagance? Since I work with my body, taking care of my artistic instrument, sometimes taking a good massage and bathing after hard work is necessary in order to be on my feet the next day.

On what occasion would I lie? When I feel that, the true is not helpful and a white lie can be more constructive to the relationship.

What is the influence of role models, in my work and in my life? Very important good role models go a long way, a lifetime I will say since I started working in the theater very early in my life. I keep good models in my heart; I cherish their company and feel that if I become a role model for my students I hope to live up well to that responsibility.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Mediocrity that sells in a commercial market, vulgarity.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? Every time I start a new project: a performance, a book a new theatrical belly dance project. Every time I’m in the Breath Theater rehearsing and working with artists.

If I could, what would I change about myself? I’d like to be better at delegating!

What is my greatest achievement in work? Having a family and 3 kids and continuing dancing with great pleasure. Being a pioneer in dance in Italy with hard work and passion producing the first belly dance video, and documentary, first Belly Dance program for pregnant women and dance teachers and opening with my husband, the Breath Theater dedicated to Dance Research and the production of Performances. The great achievement in all this, is helping dancers and teachers of the belly dance community, open up to the hidden potential of this art and to their own and see them shine on their own.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? The Feronia Archeological Site near the Breath Theater where I shoot my first video and where I go for walks and art visits.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city? Our cultural center after the shows.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My family: my 3 kids. Leandro and Gabriel are twins and finishing High School they work in the theater doing the sound, scenography, video, music and Martinica that dances professionally and writes. My husband Calogero, who listens to my projects when they are just an idea and helps me in many ways with passion.

Whom would I like to work with in the future? Be able to have the means to produce more theater performances with the people that study with me, know this type of work, and want to keep growing together.

What project, in the nearby future, am I looking forward to work on? I am presenting my last book “Burka” that has very good reviews, and doing two performances: PaperBellyDolls and The Four Winds Song. In September 2017, I’ll start my new AntiOdalisque program and I’m already working on it.
