What is the best thing that I love about my work? The freedom. The creativity. The ability to use my imagination for something productive at last (I was the kid that imagined monsters and creatures and fantastical places pretty much all the time) It all started with Dr. Seuss I swear. I absolutely love watching people literally come forward off the page to meet me. Most of my portraits are looking directly at the viewer because I want them to, they look directly at me as I create them. Every world I create is a world I would live in.
What is my idea of perfect happiness? A weekend, with my artist hubby, all our furbabies, at home, both immersed in great projects and a good bottle of wine and good music. Perfection. I find that scenario to be the most inspiring to me by far. Add in a good grilled steak or a chicken breast and fresh veggies from the garden and it is truly perfection.
What is my greatest fear? Losing the ones I love.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? Procrastination. always. I am a horrible procrastinator.
Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? So many. So so many. My fellow art Collective members, because they are all awesome and all have challenges they deal with and they are strong, talented, and fearless. Dave, my hubby, because he is so resourceful and talented, he still impresses me after all these years. My tribe at Creative Spirit Marketplace because they are a hard working, inspiring group of artsies.
What is my greatest extravagance? Jewelry. I adore anything that sparkles. I never have enough. (Yes, I have more than enough but that doesn’t stop me. Also perfume. I love perfume.
On what occasion would I lie? I would lie to save a loved one from something that would frighten or hurt them with no possible good outcome. Only then, because I know I have to deal with the guilt of knowing I lied.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? The uncertainty of the income at times, but honestly that’s it. Everything else about it I love. 99% of the time I pinch myself that I have had this opportunity.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work? I am happy on each and every piece when it is coming together and i am happy with it. Now. Now is the absolute best time of my work (and I hope I can always say that). So now, now is the happiest I have ever been in my work
If I could, what would I change about myself? I would be more disciplined, definitely.
What is my greatest achievement in work? The easiest question of all; the souls I have met. I have run across the most beautiful, lovely people that many are now my friends. We share this hard journey of life, and I am by far a better woman for knowing each of them, whether they are clients or fellow artists.
Where would I most like to live? I would love to pick up our house out here and drop it someplace tropical. But I don’t have a specific destination, because I love my life out here in the country.
What is my most treasured possession? An armoire Dave custom made for me years ago. Also, a tiny, ceramic angel my mom sent me that had belonged to my grandma.
What is my most marked characteristic? My sense of humor. It is also my fave trait because I see life in a comical way and it has always kept me from taking myself (or anyone else), too seriously.
What is my most inspirational location, in my city? My own backyard and house. We custom designed and built this house, block by block, just the 2 of us, and there is no house like it. We live on 5 acres in rural Iowa, where EVERYTHING grows. We have walking paths, a pool, a waterfall, hundreds of flowers and it is way way back from the road. It is our sanctuary more than just a house. I can THINK out here. I can breathe out here. I love it more than anywhere else I have ever lived. It is my muse.
What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? Spagetti works in the old market of Omaha, because we have such great memories there. Omaha has an amazing collection of restaurants/bars, there are so many great little spots. From Trinis, to a great little mexican place, to so greek, Italian, small places, huge chains, Omaha is brimming with great places for foid and drink. Since Omaha is about a 30 min drive from here, it us very doable.
What books influenced my life and how? “A wrinkle in time” I read when i was 8. It opened the gates of my imagination. “Stranger in a Strange Land” “The White Mountains/The City of Gold and Lead/The pool of fire added to it. I read “The exorcist” as my first “adult book”, slept with the lights on for about a month and then read pretty much nothing but horror for about 20 years.
Who are my favorite writers? Stephen King will always have a place in my heart. Anne Rice too, Dean Koontz.
You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? I love so many different kinds of music. Dead can Dance. Old hippie music like csn, Neil Young, Prodigy, old skool techno, Celtic music, it all depends on my mood and I love just about every genre of music. I have these elaborate mixed stations I have curated on Pandora, I love the eclectic mix.
Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Roland from the Dark Tower series by King.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? Not the rich, famous, in-the-news, obvious choices, but the everyday folks who get up and slog through the bills, the struggle of everyday life and still help each other out along the way and expect nothing in return. Not the ones in the stories you read, or the documentaries, but the simple folks, who never get an article about them, or a movie or news segment.
Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? “What Dreams May Come”, “Cloud Atlas”
What role plays art in my life and work? Art and creativity is the center of not only my life, but my family. Project to project, art is life for us. It is the center of our life. As soon as one project is finished, I am filled with a burning desire to do better, always better (the endless artist hunger)
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? Easy, my artist hubby Dave. He is and always has been, my biggest supporter. But Linz, (Lindsay VanHove), my co-admin of Creative Spirit Marketplace deserves a shoutout too, we chat at odd times and unconditionally support each other’s journey.
Whom would I like to work with in 2018? oooooo I have absolutely no idea.
Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2018? hmmmm again, I have no idea. At this point in my life I work far from everyone, out here on the Iron Dog ranch (as we call it). I take life pretty easily so if I get out I do, if not, I’m fine too. I’m in a very laid back vibe lately and very focused on the work. I’d love to meet all these artists I have become pals with, not only our art collective, but fellow artists at csm. We are all over the world which is so cool, but also so far!
What project, in 2018, am I looking forward to work on? I am writing a book. I am so stoked about that. At last.
