Passion Never Retires for Kerry Zacharia

What is the best thing that I love about my work? The best thing I love about my work as an artist is the subconscious energy that flows from within my soul creating hundreds of mesmerising connections.  The lines and patterns expressed in my paintings have become my trademark.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? My idea of perfect happiness is a stress free day filled with the simplest of moments.  This could be so simple as having a coffee in my little garden listening to the birds singing.

What is my greatest fear?  My greatest fear is entrapment of any kind.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? The trait I most deplore in myself would have to be my sensitive nature.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? David Sandum, I admire his work as well as his openness and philanthropic nature. David is a Swedish artist who is also the founder of the Twitter Art Exhibit. This annual event raises money for a charity selected in the hosting country through sales of hundreds of original art postcards donated by artists all around the world.

What is my greatest extravagance? Dark Chocolate!

On what occasion would I lie? I would only lie to spare someone’s feelings.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? I am going to be absolutely honest and say that drawing is the aspect of my work I dislike the most.  It’s the part of my work I need to pay utmost attention to.  Some of my drawings are quite technical and an important part of the foundation of my work.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? I was the most happiest in my work during the four weeks of my first major solo exhibition in central London, near St Paul’s from March to April 2018.  Experiencing the remarkable response and engagement from the public was the most gratifying experience ever.  I had always received great feedback but this was certainly on a higher level and especially as some of the people had just been to the Tate Modern to see the Picasso exhibition and viewed my exhibition in a high regard and were full of praise, some expressing that people should pay to see it and that I also belonged over at the Tate Modern. I could visibly see how my art energised and uplifted people and I even inspired a few artists to start painting again.  Being able to energise and uplift my audience was my key objective and this was met.

If I could, what would I change about myself? Absolutely nothing, but I always learn and evolve.

What is my greatest achievement in work? My greatest achievement in my work so far would have to be the same answer as the happiest moment in my work.

Where would I most like to live? Other than London also in Cyprus, my country of origin.

What is my most treasured possession? I treasure my daughter although not a material possession.  Materially, it would have to be my first ever ink on paper painting which belongs to my private collection.

What is my most marked characteristic? My most marked ‘personal’ characteristic would have to be my natural white blonde hair.  It’s definitely a useful marker because people remember me because of it.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? St Paul’s in London near the Cathedral.  I always feel a sense of freedom and my spirits uplifted when I’m around the Cathedral.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? Too many favourites in London.

What books influenced my life and how? ‘Fearless Loving’ by Rhonda Britten.  I found great comfort and understanding in reading this book back in 2004 at a critical turning point in my life.  I believe the book helped me to develop as a person whilst embarking on a new chapter in my life.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? A bit of a morbid question. The funky tunes of George Michael.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Superwoman.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? My mother, father, brother, sister and my daughter and a handful of close friends.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? Saturday Night Fever.

What role plays art in my life and work? Art plays a significant role in my life but it’s not my bread and butter.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?  My greatest fan has to be this lovely retired copyrighter that I met in December 2015 who has followed me and supported my art development ever since.  There is no one main sponsor but there are few who have chosen to invest in my art to date and I have the support of my family and close friends.

Whom would I like to work with in 2018? Million dollar question.  I would love to be showcased in a public establishment in London such as the Museum of London or a national gallery but I guess this is just a dream that will not transpire in 2018.

Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2018? Influential people in the profession as networking is an essential ingredient.  Being talented or unique and in some ways being different is not an immediate advantage. One needs to be seen and recognised.  Therefore forming the connections with professionals in the same way that I form them with the general public is one of my great challenges ahead.

What project, in 2018, am I looking forward to work on? I’m looking forward to curating my first exhibition later this year to celebrate a key figure in the Greek Cypriot community here in London.

Where can you see me or my work in 2018? All my paintings available for sale are showcased on my website via the Gallery page.  Private viewings can by appointment otherwise subscribe to receive exhibition news via the Contact page on my website.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? The story of my ‘artist’ life.

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? Lara Kavanagh, artist.
